Guyu - literally Gu means grains and Yu means rains - is the 6th solar term.
The term “Grain Rain” is originated from a folk story. When Cang Jie, an official during the Yellow Emperor period, created writing characters, grain came down from sky like rain drops. Therefore, the Yellow Emperor named the day as the “Grain Rain”.
Traditional Customs and Seasonal Food
Picking tea is a custom in Guyu in the southern China. It’s said that drinking tea in Guyu will help people clear away heat, get rid of evil spirits and improve eyesight. So no matter what the weather is like in Guyu, people will go and pick some new tea leaves to drink. In the northern China, people eat Chinese toon to on as a custom in Guyu, so we also say Chinese toon is tender as silk in Guyu.
